A new wave of innovation is taking shape off the coast of Miami Beach. This week, The Reefline reached a major milestone as the first concrete car-shaped reef modules were deployed offshore marking the beginning of an underwater art installation that merges creativity, science, and coastal ecology.
The Reefline will ultimately form a snorkel trail of artist-designed sculptures that double as artificial reef modules, creating marine habitat and promoting coral and fish growth while offering a one-of-a-kind experience for snorkelers and divers.
Our Role Beneath the Surface
Bennco Engineering has been an integral part of The Reefline since its early stages, providing the technical and regulatory foundation that makes this creative concept possible. Our team’s work included:
• Artificial reef and coastal engineering design
• Environmental and regulatory permitting through the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Florida Department of Environmental Protection, and Miami-Dade County Division of Environmental Resources Management
• Benthic resource mapping, sediment probe surveys, and bathymetric analysis to support site selection and design criteria
• Development of reef design guidelines used by the project’s artists and concrete manufacturers to ensure the modules meet engineering, stability, and environmental standards
• Construction administration and grant management assistance, including support for securing $5 million through the Miami Beach GO Bond
Engineering Meets Art and Ecology
By combining coastal engineering expertise with environmental science and permitting experience, Bennco Engineering helped transform The Reefline from a visionary idea into a buildable, sustainable reef system that contributes to both art and marine life restoration.
The deployment of the concrete cars represents just the first step in a multi-phase effort that will continue to expand offshore Miami Beach creating a new kind of public space beneath the waves.
